I experienced so many emotions reading Andrew Bauman‘s new book, Safe Church. Among them, was the feeling of being seen. In his research, Andrew, who is a professional counselor, surveyed and interviewed women who have spent various amounts of time in evangelical churches and ministry environments in the U.S. These women reported experiences of sexism and abuse inside of those places. Each statistic and story is a reminder of the existing systems, and how harmful they continue to be for women. If you’re a woman listening to this episode or reading this book, I’m curious what resonated with you. If you’re a man listening to this episode, I’m wondering if you recognize the problems in these contexts and, if so, if you might consider learning more and becoming an advocate and ally for the women around you in these spaces.
