Every time I catch a news headline with something tragic happening in the world, or close to home, I have a sense of grief, many times accompanied by a sense of helplessness. What can I do? is the question that haunts me. I’m not a community organizer or a formal advocate and even in the small actions I know could help, I sometimes feel immobilized. For all of these reasons, and more, I am grateful for this recent work by Charon Hribar and Liz Theoharis, We Pray Freedom. They have gathered prayers, liturgies, songs, and stories from many traditions focused on justice. In this conversation, Charon reminds that lament and prayer are just as important parts of the path toward justice, as are organization and activism.
