I did not know this book (and this conversation!) with Dr. Chanequa was exactly what I needed right now. Dr. Chanequa, as a psychologist, professor, and preacher, encourages and challenges that self-care ought not be an afterthought in our daily lives. Also being true, self-care doesn’t only consist of the things we’ve been socialized to believe it consists of: spa days and manicures. Self-care is sacred because we are sacred. We, as embodied creatures of the most high Creator are sacred to God and, as Dr. Chanequa reminds, our bodies are God’s first gift to each of us. It will do us good for us to care for them holistically. If this practice has ever been difficult (and for most of us, I imagine that to be the case), this episode is for you.
