In the West, the Christian tradition we have inherited involves certain views of the God of the Bible and violence. It’s something many, if not most, of us have taken for granted in our discipleship. But what about the rich heritage of Christians in Eastern traditions? How do they teach and learn and experience God when it comes to the topic of violence? Is it a divine attribute? What about God’s response to people who have been harmed by violent acts? Dr. Phuc Luu, author, artist, and teacher, helps us engage some of these important questions in this conversation based on his 2020 release, Jesus of the East.
On a personal note, some of the concepts presented here may seem really foreign (they did to me at first, as well) and that’s okay. I invite you to listen anyway and embrace any questions and tension that may surface up for you. God is ever present in our inquiries.
