Growing up in Oklahoma (read 12 years of public school history classes), you’d think I would have taken in droves of information about our nation’s history with Indigenous peoples. After all, Oklahoma has one of the highest populations of Native Americans in the U.S. and, if you understand some of the basic history, you’ll know that’s no accident. Our government, intentionally drove many tribes to that central location through often lethal trails on their way to fulfilling manifest destiny. In L. Daniel Hawk’s new book, Undoing Manifest Destiny, the history I wasn’t exposed to in school (with receipts!) kept me turning the pages. Dr. Hawk names the settler mindset under which many Americans still operate and how it has and continues to affect how we interact with First Nations communities and traditions. A professor of the Bible and a student of history, Dr. Hawk shines light on the common narratives, and their subsequent devastating actions, that continue to wreak havoc today.
