Part of the story of the resurrection has bothered me as I looked back on the text this week. Why does Jesus tell Mary not to cling to him after he calls out to her outside his empty tomb? You’d think he would welcome her embrace, hold on to her with all his might and comfort her as he stroked her hair and held her chin in his hands. But the text doesn’t tell us any of those things. We read that he tells her, “Don’t cling to me…” This week after Easter, I took a little time to share a bit of my wrestling with his words.
